Live-in care versus care homes in Oxfordshire

An even-handed look at the two options, including the cases where a care home is the right answer.

Attention

Residential staff spread themselves across a whole floor each shift; a resident carer answers to a single household.

Familiar surroundings

Remaining at home preserves routines, neighbours, belongings and the local GP. For people living with dementia, familiarity can significantly reduce distress.

Couples and pets

A couple with differing needs may be separated in residential care. At home, one carer can support both - and the dog stays too.

Cost in Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire residential fees rank high nationally. Light needs for one person may still favour a home; heavier needs, and couples especially, often tilt the sums the other way - helped by the council ignoring your house when care is delivered in it.

When a care home is right

Round-the-clock nursing, double-handed transfers, or a personality that blossoms in company can all point to a good care home instead - and we'll tell you if we think so.
